Brownsberg Afobaka Suriname
The Brokopondo Reservoir was originally called the Prof. W.J. van Blommesteinmeer, named after its designer. When it was completed in 1965, about 5,000 Saramaccan Maroons were forced to move. The reservoir has a special appearance because of the dead treetops that protrude above the water.

Dam
Afobaka is a village in the Brokopondo district that was developed when the dam was constructed in 1961. It is now an important transit port for the Maroons who live in the villages along the Brokopondo reservoir.
